Welcome to my website and Caribbean High
Like lots of writers, I have done many things in my life. I hated school and left at the first opportunity. With few qualifications, I set off on the long trek through the job market, finding work in the most unlikely places.
I inherited my love of the sea from my great grandfather Thomas Turner to whom I bare a striking resemblance. He was at sea when sailing ships still plied their trade on the east coast of England. Single-handed sailing is my passion. Amongst other long-distance voyages, I have twice crossed the Atlantic alone. Currently, I edit the Caribbean waterfront magazine All At Sea, and host several shows on Island 92, 91.9FM, a rock and blues station in St. Maarten, Dutch West Indies. Jan is my wife, lover and crew. On our travels, she has been shot at, mortared and, while sailing, twice capsized in a storm. She has kept me on track and reasonably sober. I would not have made it this far without her. Caribbean High is an action-packed, blood and guts adventure. I kept the nautical terms as simple as possible so that non-sailors could enjoy the fun. Readers have asked about the name of one of the main characters, Richard Turpin. As every Englishman knows, Dick Turpin was a notorious highwayman who terrorized travelers in the 1700s. Turpin was executed on April 7 1739 and his story became the stuff of legends. Did I steal the famous name? Maybe, but my family name is Turpin and of that I am rather proud. If you enjoy Caribbean High, then look for the next book in the ‘Caribbean’ series towards the end of the year.
