Welcome to my website and Caribbean High
I know it’s traditional for authors to write about themselves in the third person but I find that rather cold, after all you have taken the time to visit my site, you should receive a personal welcome.
Like most writers, I have done many things in my life. I hated school and left at the first opportunity. With no qualifications to speak of, I set off on the long trek through the job market where I always found work, although often in the most unlikely places.
At the time, I had no idea that my experiences would lead to a career as a writer. I had a vivid imagination, and could tell a good yarn, but it wasn’t until later in life that I started writing things down.
All my life, I have had a passion for the sea. My great grandfather was at sea when a few sailing ships still plied their trade on the east coast of England.
A career in sailing, writing and journalism is a dream come true and it has lead to all sorts of things including broadcasting. Currently, I edit the Caribbean magazine All At Sea and host several radio programs on Island 92, a rock and blues station in St. Maarten, Dutch West Indies, which has strong links to the sailing community.
Sailing is my great love and long-distance, single-handed sailing, a passion.
There is a woman in my life. Jan is wife, lover and crew and, other than single-handed sailing, we share everything. On her travels with me, she has been shot at, mortared and, while sailing, twice capsized in a storm. She has kept me on track and I would not have made it this far without her.
Caribbean High is my first novel and in it there is quite a bit of sailing. I kept the nautical terms as simple as possible so that non-sailors could enjoy the action.
Readers have asked about the name of one of the main characters, Richard Turpin. As every Englishman knows, Dick Turpin was a notorious highwayman who terrorized travelers in the early 1700s. Turpin was executed on the 7 April 1739 and his story became the stuff of legends.
Am I stealing the famous name? Perhaps, but my family name is Turpin, of that I am inordinately proud.
If you enjoy Caribbean High, then look for the next book in the ‘Caribbean’ series towards the end of the year.
Gary.
